Today was the day. The one Oikawa had been waiting for, his 18th birthday. Sometime today his soulmate tattoo would appear on his body. Iwaizumi’s tattoo had come over a month ago, a small beetle on the inside of his elbow. When it did Oikawa couldn’t keep himself from staring at it, some part of him hoping when his time came he’d get the matching one. 

He treated this day like any other of his summer holidays. Waking up and practicing, Inviting Iwaizumi over to practice, and eventually ending up with the whole team over to practice. The only thing out of the ordinary that he did was constantly check the skin he could see for a tattoo. A few different times Iwaizumi caught him zoning out while staring at his arms, and he got a few serves to the head as well. 

It wasn’t until it was just him and Iwaizumi left at Oikawa’s house that he excused himself. Iwaizumi was cooking dinner for the two of them while Oikawa’s family was away for the weekend. Oikawa went up to his bathroom to shower, wanting to wash off the sweat from the day, when he spotted it.

On his right pec sat a small beetle tattoo, the same as Iwaizumi’s in every way. Oikawa felt his heart stop in his chest, his breathing speeding up as he pushed his weight back towards the wall behind him, slumping onto the floor loudly. 

He covers his face with his hands, breathing heavily. He hears Iwaizumi rushing towards the bathroom, footsteps loud in the otherwise quiet house. “Tooru! Are you ok?” He calls from behind the door. Oikawa doesn’t know what to say, so he stays quiet. 

After a moment of silence Iwaizumi opens the door. Oikawa keeps his head in his hands, still processing that his best friend since childhood, his crush for a fair bit of that, is his soulmate. Once Iwaizumi’s eyes land on the tattoo, he inhales quickly. 

“Are you serious?” Iwaizumi whispers, kneeling down in front of Oikawa. “Tooru. Look at me.” He says, grabbing Oikawa’s wrist gently and tugging a little. Oikawa caves, letting Iwaizumi move his hands from his face. Oikawa’s cheeks are red, and once his hands are moved he looks to Iwaizumi.

“We….” Oikawa starts, only for Iwaizumi to cut him off with a kiss, arms tugging Oikawa close. Oikawa gasps, melting into the kiss and wrapping his arms around Iwaizumi’s shoulders. “Yeah, we’re soulmates Tooru.” Iwaizumi says once they pull apart. “I’ve spent most of my life with you so far. I can’t wait to see what the rest is like.” Iwaizumi speaks softly, hoping Oikawa feels at least somewhat the same.

“I’m excited as well. I was so worried that my soulmate wouldn’t be you, Hajime...” Oikawa admits, glancing around the room before settling his eyes back on Iwaizumi’s. Iwaizumi smiles at him. “But we are soulmates. I’m so glad.” He says, kissing his cheek gently and resting his head on Oikawa’s shoulder.

On the floor of Oikawa’s bathroom, on his 18th birthday, their two hearts beat in sync as they listen to the water run inside of the shower. Relief and the start of something new blooming inside of their chests. Neither of them would have anyone else as their soulmate, afterall they’ve gone through most of their lives together already.
